課程概述 |
This course is an introductory survey of the history of modern Korea from the late fourteenth century to the present. The timeframe of this course covers the rise and fall of the Chosǒn dynasty (1392-1910), Korea under Japanese colonial rule, and the continuing division between North and South Korea. We will study historical change and continuity in Korean society, and particular emphasis will be placed on situating Korea in a broader regional context of East Asia and beyond. We will read historical surveys and primary materials in translation, supplemented by visual materials and film screenings. Readings will also include popular tales of the Chosŏn period and a seventeenth-century account of the shipwreck of a Dutch vessel in Korea. The structure of this course combines lecture and discussion. Approximately half of class time will be devoted to lectures and discussion of historical context. We will use the second half of class time to discuss the assigned primary source readings. There are no prerequisites for this course. |

Students who complete this course successfully will:
● Attain a foundational understanding of the major themes and questions in the history of modern Korea.
● Acquire a historical perspective from which to examine the traditions and contemporary transformations of Korean society.
● Demonstrate proficiency in critically assessing historical evidence in both reading and writing.
● Develop skills in persuasive analysis, argument, and communication. |
課程要求 |
● Class Participation: You are expected to come to class regularly, complete all assigned readings before class, and actively participate in in-class discussions.
● Weekly Web Postings: As part of class participation, each week you should submit a reflection of no more than a paragraph on your reading of the assigned material on the course website at least 24 hours prior to class. Everyone is expected to look over all postings before arriving in class. These postings need not be in polished form, and you are welcome to focus on one or two of the week’s readings. Possible postings may take the form of a question about the reading, a comparison with other or previous readings, or a response to another student’s posting. Postings are designed to start a dialogue about the readings before class and to facilitate discussion and analysis during class.
● One Critical Response Paper (500 words, double-spaced, due in paper & electronic copy) on a document chosen from our primary source readings. Through writing a response paper, you will develop skills in critically and succinctly analyzing historical evidence in written format. A strong response paper should demonstrate: 1) a critical reading of your document’s language and rhetoric, 2) a solid understanding of its historical context, and 3) a thoughtful consideration of its limitations and biases as historical evidence. Also be sure to provide specific examples from the text of your document to illustrate your analysis.
● Map Quiz in class.
● Midterm Exam in class.
● One Essay (1500-2000 words, double-spaced, due in paper & electronic copy) critically examining THREE documents chosen from our primary source readings. Building upon the analytical skills you have gained from writing critical response papers, you will examine historical change and continuity across time and space through analysis of three primary sources. In order to ascertain that your documents present as broad a range as possible, they should be selected from three separate class meetings on the syllabus (e.g. one from week 2, another from week 6, and a third from week 11). As in the case of response papers, a strong essay should demonstrate: 1) a critical reading of your documents’ language and rhetoric, 2) a solid understanding of their historical context, and 3) a thoughtful consideration of their limitations and biases as historical evidence. Your essay should also critically analyze historical change and continuity reflected in your document selection. Be sure to provide specific examples from each of your documents to illustrate your analysis.
